80 years ago, the ancient city of Kamianets-Podilskyi was shaken by a bloody tragedy that eventually became known to the whole world. Then, in 1941-1942, a real hunt was organized for people of Jewish nationality, the number of victims of Nazism was estimated at tens of thousands, including not only the local population, but also exiles from European countries.
On August 27, a large rally was held at the Holocaust Memorial, at which the mayor of Kamianets-Podilskyi, Mykhailo Volodymyrovych Posetko, spoke. The city's residents, who now live in America, Germany and other countries, came to the rally especially for the rally. Although the Jewish community of Kamianets-Podilskyi is getting smaller every year, more and more people are coming to honor the memory of the innocent victims. Because the tragedy of the Holocaust is not only a part of Jewish history, it is a very bitter part of world history.
Pebbles, lit lamps, wreaths and fresh flowers were placed at the graves. Tears welled up in the eyes. A memorial prayer was read by Rabbi Yosef Teitelbaum. During these days of the month of Elul, on the eve of the Jewish New Year Rosh Hashanah, the shofar sounds in synagogues as a call to repentance. It was also sounded at the Memorial.
No matter how many years pass, the thought of innocent people, mercilessly murdered, erased from life, breaks the soul, does not fit in the head. The Holocaust is an extremely painful topic. But - it happened, and we must remember this so that something like this never happens again, with any people...
