Oleksandra Katerynenko

It is nice when young people are interested in the history of their locality: it is useful both for the youngest researchers, who are enriched with knowledge about their native land, and for the public. After all, the inquisitive mind of young people is able to impartially systematize already known facts and search for new information from various sources. And it is especially nice when young people are interested in the history and culture of representatives of other nationalities, who have left a noticeable mark on the history of modern cities. This is exactly what Oleksandra Katerynenko, a resident of Slavutych, did.

According to the girl's mother, a teacher at Lyceum No. 9 "Uspikh" in Slavuta, Biletska Halyna Vasylivna, her daughter was always fascinated by something unusual. She was attracted to other cultures, and was not satisfied with stereotypes and standards. The 11th grade student decided to direct her creative potential to studying the ethnocultural landscape of the shtetl of Slavuta (this is the name in Yiddish) in the scientific work of the same name for the competition of the Small Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Oleksandra not only drew information from sources, but also used the opportunity to communicate with representatives of the Jewish community of today's Slavuta, which contributed to the discovery of interesting facts on the topic.

The value of the work lies in its composition and informational part: clear demarcation of sections, specificity and factuality, structure and brevity. The material is presented in an accessible manner, which is suitable for both pupils or students, and for teachers or lecturers as a good methodological basis for preparing for classes. And despite its scientific nature, the work is easy to read, which makes it interesting for everyone.

Khmelnytskyi Charitable Foundation “Hesed Besht” highly appreciates the interest of extraordinary people in the history and culture of the Jewish community. Not so long ago, the multicultural region lived in harmony and concord, and there were no conflicts between representatives of different nationalities. Now the situation is also stable, but people who have forgotten history are sometimes imbued with ideas of chauvinism, xenophobia, or anti-Semitism, which harms the entire society. Interest in the culture of others, unity in differences – that is the tolerance that our organization promotes. Therefore, we are sincerely grateful to Oleksandr and his mother Halyna Vasylivna for the work done!
