For the second time this year, our Hesed hosted a seminar on Yiddish culture. This time, it was conducted by Yulia Smilyanska, director of the Institute of Judaica in Kyiv.
Yiddish culture is another loss of the Holocaust. But even given the interest in Yiddish among the Jewish and non-Jewish population, it is clear that it is too early to classify it as a dead language. It is within our power to restore not only the language, but also knowledge about the huge layer of culture of those times: language, everyday life, theater, folklore, education, etc.
The past of the people belongs to each of us equally. Many years have passed since the Holocaust. We, robbed and deprived of our roots, are allowed to be a people, to have our own culture. And what it will be depends only on us.
We learned a lot that day. It's just wonderful that there are so many true enthusiasts of this cause, capable of inspiring a wide range of people with their ideas. Being aware of our historical responsibility, we will not allow the invisible chain that connects us with the generations that have passed away to be broken.
