Proskurov's former face

prosk37_15To mark the 16th anniversary of the creation of the regional charitable foundation “Hesed Besht”, the city history museum is hosting a photo exhibition by Leonid Zapadenko “Where to get a little happiness…”. The author is an amateur photographer and researcher. Working as a volunteer for “Hesed Besht” since 2013, Leonid Petrovych found many photos — evidence that Proskuriv used to be a small Jewish shtetl, because most of its residents are Jews. Collecting photos of relatives and friends, working in archives, the author of the exhibition, which included 76 works, demonstrated what our city was like at the beginning of the 20th century.

In addition to portraits of the then residents, Leonid Zapadenko presented many urban landscapes. Photos of former streets are impressive. Looking at them, you can learn about everyday life, crafts, and the main purpose of buildings, which were mostly shops.
Many of the exhibits at the exhibition are drawings reproduced by the author. Some debuted at the exhibition and became a real highlight for the city. All the works reflect the color of Proskurov, the mood of the residents, and everything that used to be their happiness.
To mark the opening of the exhibition and the anniversary of the foundation, friends and colleagues from Hesed Beshtu, Halyna Atamanchuk and Anatoliy Muzyka, presented several Jewish songs to the audience.
The city department of culture and tourism recognized Leonid Zapadenko's research and local history activities with a certificate.
The event was complemented by a tour of the city's history by the museum's director, Svitlana Mikhailova.
