"My house is my fortress," says an old folk saying. This is true, because for any person, home is the main place of peace and protection, comfort and warmth. Therefore, it is always bad when housing falls into disrepair and causes problems for the owners. Especially if these people cannot take care of repairs on their own, being in a risk group or living in extreme poverty. Then the house becomes a dungeon that oppresses a person. Thanks to the kind hearts from the international organization World Jewish Relief The Khmelnytskyi Charitable Foundation "Hesed Besht" helps needy people to cope with their own housing problems by repairing apartments and houses.
Cooperation with WJR in terms of minor home repairs began in our organization in 2013. During this time, 56 repairs were carried out (respectively 10 in 2013, 14 in 2014, 15 in 2015 and 17 in the current year) across the entire territory of the Hesed Besht CBF, which includes Khmelnytskyi and Ternopil regions. The works were carried out at clients from Khmelnytskyi, Derazhna, Kamenets-Podolskyi, Shepeyrvka, Polonyi, Ternopil, Shepetovka and Vynkovets.
Viktor Kravchenko, who has worked in the organization for many years and knows the needs of most clients, supervises the repair work. The need for repairs is also determined during personal home visits to clients. Repair work is carried out by professional contractors, which are determined by tendering. The absence of "self-reliance" guarantees clients high-quality repair, significantly simplifies the relationship between the customer (Fund) and the executors, having legal guarantees.
What can our clients get in terms of home repairs? These are, of course, cosmetic repairs of premises, especially those that have suffered from dampness or old age, moisture or soot. This includes installation of water heating devices, replacement of plumbing fixtures, installation of metal-plastic window systems, replacement of linoleum, painting or plastering, pasting of wallpaper and replacement of electrical wiring with lamps or switches. Sometimes there are more complex works, especially in the regions of Khmelnytskyi and Ternopil regions, where the situation with housing and communal services is much more neglected than in regional or district centers.
According to all home repair clients, they would never have solved these problems on their own. Without outside help, the members of the Jewish community are not able to carry out repairs in financial terms. And due to health conditions or the absence of loved ones, many cannot even independently maintain what they already have in normal condition. Thus, in this regard, Hesed Besht and WJR are the only helpers for them in housing matters.
On behalf of all grateful clients and the "Hesed Besht" Foundation in particular, I would like to express my deep gratitude to the foreign partner World Jewish Relief for charitable assistance to members of our Jewish communities. This help in the monetary equivalent is quite tangible for our people, but it is even more tangible at the level of Tzdakah and the feeling of community unity, which arises after realizing the solution to the long-standing problems with comfortable housing. After all, it is much better to think about the high and the good without the absence of a draft from the shattered window frames or without leaking taps on the water supply.
