On May 14, the public of our country for the first time celebrated the Day of Remembrance of Ukrainians who saved Jews during World War II. Ukraine ranks fourth in the world in terms of the number of righteous people. Anyone who dared to help Jews had extraordinary courage, because this manifestation of humanity could lead to the extermination of the entire family of the saviors and even neighbors. The evidence that mercy could cost one's life is the data of the Lviv archive: there are more than 40 criminal cases of the German court against Ukrainians and Poles who provided assistance to Jews. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Hesed Besht Charity Foundation always cherishes the memory of the Righteous Among the Nations and the Peoples of Ukraine, of whom there were about 80 in the Khmelnytskyi region. Since Hesed has been operating (and this is more than two decades), we have been collecting information about those people of high nobility and extraordinary decency. In our Holocaust Memorial Museum, there is an entire exhibition about the Righteous Among the Nations, describing their exploits. And in the Jerusalem Yad Vashem Museum, the names of the worthy are engraved on the Wall of the Righteous Among the Nations. A named olive tree has been planted in honor of each of them.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We very much welcomed the news of the introduction of the Day of the Righteous. On this day, we remembered by name all those awarded this title, spoke in several local media outlets. We hope that each territorial community remembered its long-time neighbors - heroes of that time - with a kind word. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Here is what Viktor Kucheruk, the chief specialist of the organizational and personnel department of the Izyaslav City Council, wrote to us: "Among the righteous are 12 Izyaslav residents: Finkel (Yakubovskaya) Maria, Kropovensky Mykhailo, Sveshnikova Yevgenia, Kornelyuk Ivan, Kornelyuk Hanna, Kornelyuk Georgy, Radayeva Halyna, Moiseyev Ivan, Zubrytska Natalia, Demus Bronislava, Nikitenko Halyna, Solovyova Domnikia. From May 10 to 14, a culturological project "Marathon of Stories. Ukrainians-Saviors" was held on the Izyaslav City Council website and on the official Facebook page. During its implementation, five stories about Izyaslav residents who provided shelter to Jews during World War II were published. And on May 14, at the initiative of the Izyaslav city mayor, 12 thujas were planted near the former premises of the Novozaslav synagogue - in honor of each righteous person. This action was joined by employees of the Izyaslav city council, the Komunenergo utility company, and city residents.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Needless to say, a wonderful initiative, worth emulating! Dear Izyaslav citizens! Thank you for your memory and concern! <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
