One of the areas of work of the Khmelnytsky Charitable Foundation "Hesed Besht" is the preservation of monuments of the region's Jewish cultural heritage, mass graves and monuments. Under the care of the Khmelnytsky Charitable Foundation "Hesed Besht" is the only monument in Ukraine to the victims of the Proskuriv pogrom in 1919 on Leo Tolstoy Street.<\/p>\n

In the period from March 27 to 28, let's say at night, an act of vandalism was committed on this monument. Unknown persons damaged the northern part of the monument, which faces directly onto L. Tolstoy Street. The attackers applied two drawings to the main part of the memorial with aerosol paint. In total, about three square meters of the monument's surface were damaged. The plaster of the base does not allow the inscriptions to be simply erased, therefore, to remove the "graffiti", all damaged areas must be repainted.<\/p>\n

As for the inscriptions themselves, their character tends to be ideological, rather than simply hooligan, which are left behind by people who consider themselves "street artists". Both drawings left on the monument are recognizable. The first of them is an inscription with the numbers "14\/88" - a code slogan of fascist groups fighting for the purity of the white race. The other symbol, which looks like the Latin letter "N" crossed out by a vertical line, is similar to the symbol "Idea of the Nation" used by ultra-right nationalists.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that the act of vandalism against the monument to the victims of the Proskuriv pogrom occurred for the first time in its entire history (installed in 1925, reconstructed to its current appearance in 2000). To date, no inscriptions of any nature or intentional damage to the monument or elements of the surrounding territory have occurred.<\/p>\n

It should also be recalled that on March 13, 2014, three symbols similar to the "Idea of the Nation" were spray-painted by unknown individuals on another facility subordinate to the Khmelnytskyi Charitable Foundation "Hesed Besht" - the "Thiya" Community Center at 58\/1 Kamyanetska Street.<\/p>\n

Given the frequent manifestations of vandalism, which previously did not occur in the public life of our city and the work of the Khmelnytsky Jewish Community Foundation "Hesed Besht", clients express concern. The Director of the organization and the Head of the Board of the Khmelnytsky Jewish Community, Ihor Ratushny, held a number of meetings and consultations with local authorities and public organizations in order to resolve the situation.
