On the screen \u2013 a memorial to the victims of the uprising<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Today the whole world remembers the beginning of the brave and tragic events that began in 1943 in neighboring Poland. We are talking about the beginning of the uprising in the Warsaw ghetto - an attempt by Jews sentenced to death to resist the fascist punishers. Unfortunately, even the long-term confrontation ended in the defeat of the Jewish minority. But in the memory of generations it remained as a model of heroism and struggle.<\/p>\n

Polish historian Ben Mark wrote:<\/p>\n

"Many wars of liberation carried within them the germ of inevitable defeat, but none of them bore the stamp of such profound tragedy as the last fighting impulse of the remnants of the inhabitants of the Warsaw ghetto, which flared up on the grave of their loved ones, without rear, almost without weapons, with no chance of victory."<\/em><\/p>\n

The operation to liquidate the Warsaw Ghetto began at three o'clock in the morning on April 19, 1943. There is speculation that the start date of the operation was linked to the beginning of the Jewish holiday of Passover (the evening of April 19) or Hitler's birthday (April 20).<\/p>\n

The overall leadership of the operation was exercised by the SS Brigadef\u00fchrer, Major General of Police J\u00fcrgen Stroop, and up to 2,000 or even more than 2,000 personnel (SD employees, police officers, Wehrmacht soldiers and SS units - including an SS battalion consisting of 337 Ukrainian and Latvian nationalists) participated in the operation, supported by artillery and armored vehicles, and the Nazis had 82 machine guns and service dogs at their disposal.<\/p>\n

The total number of insurgents was about 1,500 people. The ghetto was surrounded by a brick wall about 3 meters high (some sections of the wall were up to 3.5 m high), in some places barbed wire barriers were installed. As a result, the Germans began an offensive through the main gate. Met by organized fire from the ghetto residents, the Germans were forced to retreat with heavy losses.<\/p>\n

From Stroop's Wiesbaden report of May 1, 1946:<\/p>\n

"I put forces in action on both sides of the main street. As soon as our forces passed the main gate, they were hit by an accurate and well-coordinated fire strike. They were firing from all the windows and basements so that the shooter could not be seen. Reports of losses immediately began to come in. An armored car caught fire. Bombs and Molotov cocktails stopped any advance. While we were starting to comb one block, they were strengthening in the next. In some places we were forced to use anti-aircraft weapons. Only now did we discover underground points. Underground positions gave the rebels the opportunity to be invisible and allowed them to constantly change their location. We managed to conquer one such position only after 2 days."<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have established with precision that not only the men were armed, but also some of the women. Especially those aged 18 to 30. They were dressed in riding breeches and with helmets on their heads\u2026 Many of these women hid loaded pistols in their underwear. This is how the fighting was waged until the end of the operation, from the basement of the house to its roof\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Today, clients of the Khmelnytskyi Charitable Foundation "Hesed Besht" gathered at the Community Center "Thia" to remember the rebels and pay tribute to the fighters for freedom and their people. This date is not very well known in our country. This year, the central media mentioned it, but most citizens do not know what happened many years ago in Warsaw. Therefore, hearing from those present the remark: "Thank you "Hesed" for remembering this day" was on the one hand pleasant, and on the other - scary. Of course, we are glad that our employees and volunteers - and the meeting was prepared by manager Natalia Gerasimenko and volunteer Leonid Zapadenko - are doing their job qualitatively. And it is scary - because no one but us is now bringing information about terrible crimes and active resistance to the masses. That is why the role of the Khmelnytskyi Charitable Foundation "Hesed Besht" in the life of the Jewish community in particular and the entire society in general is extremely significant.<\/p>\n

Those present recalled the events of April 1943, watched a video specially selected on the topic of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. As always, after the scheduled part, people's memories began to emerge. They recalled how monuments and memorial signs were installed in our region, what role our Foundation and its head, Director Igor Ratushny, played in this.<\/p>\n

Very soon we will celebrate the anniversary of the victory over fascism, which took millions of lives. And without such feats as the ghetto uprising, Victory would not have been so close. Therefore, let us honor the memory of all those who fought and helped fight against tyranny and arbitrariness.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
