The Holocaust: an unhealed wound

The Holocaust Museum of the Hesed Besht Jewish Community Foundation (by the way, the only one in Western Ukraine) often receives visitors. We are happy when young people come to us. So yesterday, high school students from various schools in the city visited the museum. We got acquainted with the exposition, listened to a lecture about the Holocaust in Ukraine and in our region, about the great contribution of Jews to the approaching victory over fascism, and talked about interethnic tolerance. We believe that the seeds of goodness that we have planted in young souls will germinate and bear good fruits in the future.

This is just one episode from our daily activities. However, the more time moves us away from the terrible events of World War II, the more serious our work with young people must be. And here's why. A significant part of young Germans does not know what the Holocaust is. In France, 20% young people have also not heard of it, in Austria - 12%. Every twentieth Briton does not believe that the Holocaust even happened, and every eighth is convinced that the scale of the genocide is greatly exaggerated. Not only in Europe, but also in our lands, a significant part of young people do not know anything about the Holocaust and in surveys they answer, imagine, that it is either the name of a prison, or a disease, or a religious holiday, or, oh horror, cockroach poison.

So, the older generation that works with young people has a long way to go. We remind you that our museum is open every day, and the managers of the Hesed Besht Cultural Foundation conduct qualified free tours of the museum and the Holocaust Memorial, as well as other memorable and tragic places. We invite you!
