Presentation of "Shtetl" No. 7

An extraordinary event took place in our fund: the presentation of the literary and journalistic collection "Shtetl" No. 7. The round table meeting on this occasion was attended by scientists, historians, clergy, museum and library workers, media, and the city's caring public.

"Shtetl" No. 7 was published in memory of the Proskuriv Jewish pogrom of 1919, during which about 1,600 people were destroyed. For what reason? The Jews were accused of everything! They represented both the bourgeois, the perpetrators of the devastation, and the socialists who raised an uprising against the Directory. But we know for sure that they were absolutely peaceful people, the Jewish poor: mostly simple artisans who definitely had no interest in politics, women, the elderly, children, and even babies!

The collection "Shtetl" No. 7 contains a great many historical documents about the pogrom, lists of those killed by the Buzovirs, lists of the wounded who went to hospitals and dressing stations for help, and other facts. The publication will be useful to everyone who wants to know the true history of their native land. This collection is our honor, our tribute to the bright memory of the innocently destroyed.

It is nice that scientists and historians of Khmelnytsky continue to study that bitter bloody drama. We heard a lot of new things from the master of history Yaroslav Mykhaylovsky, the candidate of historical sciences Oleksiy Zhurko, the activist of the Jewish religious community Semyon Milman and other participants of the round table. Absolutely valid proposals were made to organize more meetings with young people in schools and libraries on this topic, to return to the study of Jewish pogroms during the time of B. Khmelnytsky, to petition the city authorities with a proposal to immortalize the names of those worthy people who were not afraid to declare their resolute protest against the pogroms (for example, to name streets, alleys, squares, parks, etc.).
