The Thiya Community Center hosted a championship in the popular intellectual game “What? Where? When?” for clients of the Hesed Besht Children’s Charity Foundation, organized by “Community” volunteers. Most of the questions in each of the three rounds had a Jewish theme, although there were also general questions on logic or erudition. Three teams participated in the competition. The game took place in conditions close to reality, using sound accompaniment prepared by Anatoliy Muzyka. The host, Galyna Atamanchuk, also acted as the moderator of the meeting, and the jury, consisting of Natalia Gerasimenko and volunteer Leonid Zapadenko, conducted a competent scoring.
The teams chose apt names for themselves: “Haverim,” “Lehaim,” and “Freilichs.” First, the rules were announced and a practice question was asked: “It is unpleasant and dangerous for every person to touch this. But if you change one letter, it will be pleasant for every Jew to touch this” (and did you guess what it is?). The teams wrote their answers on a piece of paper that was handed to the jury. There was no cheating: only one answer was considered correct. So, although one of the teams answered “zigzag” to the question about “hyperbole,” this answer was not counted. By the end of the first round, emotions began to boil over, as befits a real competition, and the favorite of the intellectual battles became noticeable.
After the second and third rounds, the prize places became clear:
I – “Haverim”;
II – “Freilichs”;
III – “Leheim”.
The winner had 8.5 points. And although the points were calculated in whole numbers, the jury added half a point (which did not play a role) for a clear half answer to one of the questions. All teams received refrigerator magnets that were made in the Fine Arts Studio of the Hesed Besht Youth and Sports Foundation. The participants and organizers were satisfied with the tournament and had the opportunity to discuss it over a cup of tea afterwards.
