Purim is the most joyful Jewish holiday. The joy of getting rid of the terrible lot that evil forces prepared for the Jews, in the person of Haman, has passed through the centuries and is still felt in the spring. The traditions of this day have no analogues in other cultures, therefore they are interesting to representatives of other nationalities. Today, representatives of various public organizations gathered at the Hesed Besht Foundation, who responded to our Foundation's offer to learn more about Purim. And the culinary highlight of the event did not leave anyone indifferent.
At 11:00 AM, the Thiia Community Center became quite crowded. Representatives of various public organizations, such as “Boyova Podruga”, “Oberih”, “Society of Disabled Women”, NGO “Ukrainian Community of Khmelnytskyi” and others, visited us. We are always glad to see these people within the walls of our Jewish home, as our friendship and fruitful cooperation in the social and cultural spheres have been going on for many years.
At the OC, employees of our organization and volunteer workers were already waiting for them: Tetyana Deynega, Nina Litvinova, Larisa Shuster, Tetyana Chausova, Nina Tsatskis and Susanna Kats. Women of the “golden age” are the best at preserving ancient Jewish recipes and, as skillful and agile housewives, are able to recreate the thousand-year-old tradition of Jewish cuisine in various dishes. Today, they focused their attention on baking “Aman’s ears” – traditional gomentashes that you can’t buy in any store. But the treat later, and first – the theory.
Lyudmila Shvartsman, Natalia Gerasimenko and volunteer Leonid Zapadenko prepared a wonderful program that, from scratch and in an accessible and comical form, told about the traditions and history of the holiday. For many of those present, this information was previously unknown, but extremely interesting. And after the theory, they moved on to practice.
Guests had the opportunity to taste gomentashi from different authors. By the way, all the cakes differed not only in appearance, but also in composition and taste. Our volunteers were literally lined up with those who wanted to sincerely thank them or ask about the secrets of the recipes.
Purim is the most joyful holiday and we, as friendly neighbors, always strive to share the joy with our neighbors. This is one of the principles on which the Khmelnytskyi Charitable Foundation “Hesed Besht” exists.
