Hour of Remembrance

An extremely moving event on the topic of the Holocaust was held at the Social Assistance Center. Halyna Atamanchuk touched the hearts of all those present with stories from the lives of Jewish women. During the events of the Holocaust, there was a lot of heroism, tolerance and other examples of resistance to enemy plans for total destruction. However, today they told stories related to the resilience and faith of the Jewish people, which did not abandon people even in the most terrible times. We know from history that the Holy Scriptures of the Jews – the Torah scrolls – were removed by the fascists and their accomplices from the lives of the Jews and destroyed along with living people, as symbols of faith and national culture. This is not surprising, because the “people of the book” are very zealous about their religious texts, which contain millennial wisdom and rules of life. It was the Torah that was the guide that led the Jews through numerous attempts by various enemies to destroy the people.

That is why the high spiritual level of the Jews has always distinguished this people from others. It is with this phenomenon that today's event was connected. Here we were talking about Jewish women, mostly rebbetzins (wives of rabbis), who did not break faith and did not abandon tradition even during persecution. They circumcised newborn boys, knowingly exposing infants to mortal danger. Unfortunately, this tradition sometimes served as confirmation of people's belonging to the Jewish people. And when the invaders doubted whether a Jew was standing before them, the presence of a brit-mila dispelled any doubts. Despite this, brave women took this step, since respect for the traditions of their ancestors and the belief that the Almighty never leaves the people prompted them not to neglect traditions under conditions of occupation.

Everyone present at the event lit a candle in memory of the victims. Among other events and actions dedicated to Holocaust Remembrance Day, this one stood out as particularly moving.
